Basra solar project: the March commissioning milestone

A ministry-reported trial phase began within the planned 1 GW plant; project-wide capacity and operating output remain distinct.

An Iraqi electricity ministry update reported by pv magazine on 4 March 2026 put 61 MW in trial operation within the first planned 250 MW block of the Basra solar plant. That dated milestone does not establish the plant’s operating capacity in October.

TotalEnergies’ Iraq overview describes a 1 GW solar development. Separately, Qatar News Agency reported an October 2024 agreement for QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies to hold 50% each in the solar project, subject to approvals. This differs from the wider GGIP consortium’s ownership structure.

The project is being commissioned in stages. The March trial figure is not an October operating-capacity estimate.
