Iraq and ACWA discuss doubling Najaf solar capacity to 2,000 MW

The commercial offer remains under discussion, with battery storage also proposed; no expanded project award has been announced.

A potential increase from 1,000 MW to 2,000 MW is being considered for the Najaf solar investment project in talks between Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and Saudi company ACWA Power. The ministry’s account of the 12 October meeting in Riyadh also identifies completion of the commercial offer as an outstanding step.

Battery energy storage forms part of the proposal. The statement refers to a 30% storage component without defining its measurement basis or discharge duration. It therefore establishes neither an MWh specification nor the amount of power that could be supplied after sunset.

The expanded capacity remains a proposal. The announcement gives no agreed tariff, financing close, equipment award or commissioning date.
