IPBL and IFC hold ESG risk training for Iraqi bank staff

The course addressed how environmental, social and governance considerations enter banking decisions and risk management.

The Iraqi Private Banks League and the International Finance Corporation have organised training for employees of banks operating in Iraq, Iraq Business News reported on 1 October, citing the league.

The course covered environmental, social and governance considerations in risk assessment and banking decisions. The league described it as part of its continuing cooperation with IFC on institutional capacity and governance.

The report does not name participating banks or announce a regulatory requirement. It records a staff-development activity; whether the training changes lending procedures will depend on subsequent implementation within each institution.

The course has a longer institutional backdrop. IFC and the Central Bank of Iraq announced an environmental and social risk-management agreement in September 2024, alongside a Sustainable Finance Roadmap for 2023–2029 and an ESG code. That helps explain the focus on risk skills; it does not establish that this particular course was mandated by the agreement or that all lenders have adopted the same procedures.
